Instant airfields are constructed of extruded aluminum panels arranged in brick-like pattern of 2-ft wide rows; panels lock together by connectors on edges of panel sections; AM-2 landing mats form all-weather landing strips capable of handling heaviest aircraft; landing strip can be transported and installed within 72 hr; two main factors in successful production of mats were further development of extrusion technology and application of electron beam welding which replaced Mig process.
