Increasing demand for larger and faster aircraft has compounded problem so that expansion of existing facilities and methods is no longer solution; new Douglas Super 60 series DC-8 aircraft, carrying in excess of 250 passengers, is showing signs of pushing limit of many facilities designed for earlier versions of DC-8; automated system, capable of dividing flow of passengers and luggage, is most promising solution; methods of diverting and segregating flows of luggage are well within state of art; possible solutions to future problems of baggage handling are offered.
