Various methods for eliminating static charge were evaluated on basis of data derived from field tests; active and passive corona discharge systems were installed in H-37 aircraft for evaluation; active system provided adequate control of aircraft charge potential; system was designed to maintain automatically near-zero charge and tested; in hover attitude, at altitude of 25 ft, aircraft charge was reduced to zero in 5 sec, and thereafter maintained within predetermined limits; residual charge voltage, measured with respect to ground, was on order of +300 v.
