Study is presented of rotor systems designed for speeds of 200 knots and higher, based on theoretical work and correlation with recent flight test results; results show that at 200 knots optimum conditions are found for partially unloaded, partially tilted rotors; at about 250 knots, auxiliary propulsion seems to become mandatory, unless rotor is tilted 90°; near 300 knots, low rotor efficiencies and excessive rotor loads are found; study is confined to characteristic Bell rotor systems having high in-plane stiffness; other findings.
