Problem of minimizing helicopter exposure to enemy fire as result of aural detection is investigated and various factors involved examined with respect to human receiver characteristics, ambient noise levels, and transmission losses; noise sources of helicopters at their gearboxes, engine exhaust (reciprocating engines), engine inlet (turbine-powered aircraft), tail rotors, and main rotors; benefits of possible noise reduction; recommendations made.
