System that will provide closed pod vehicle operator (e.g., tank driver) with 360° horizontal and 60° vertical view is currently under development at U S Army Ordnance Tank Automotive Command; virtual image on hyperbolic mirror is relayed through wide angle objective lens to photocathode surface of image intensifier tube, which then electronically amplifies brightness of incoming image and displays it on phosphor output screen; this amplified image is projected into interior surface of eliptical viewing screen for viewing by operator.
