Apr. 18 no 3353 pp. 498-500: Work of Fulton and Bell marked inauguration of use of steamboats on rivers of America and Europe respectively; steam pressures were low, and boilers were great rectangular boxes with square furnaces and long winding flues, of such size that a man could pass through them; H.M.S. Lightning, built in 1823; performance of Enterprize, by which it was hoped to establish steam communication with India. May 30 no 3359 pp. 690-693: Inauguration of transatlantic steam navigation and record of so-called Atlantic Ferry; in 1838 three British steamship companies despatched steam vessels to New York; with those companies and their ships, proper history of Atlantic Ferry begins; tables give principal dimensions of six vessels which ran to New York and of Britannia, first of Cunard ships which ran to Halifax.
