Failure by fracture of large number of steel rails of flat-bottom type, 95 lb. per yd., forming portion of supply to Egyptian State Railways, caused writer to pursue investigations, result of which is given; tests on more than 100 different sections of rails tend to confirm opinion that chilling in rails containing relatively high percentage of manganese and carbon is cause of fracture, leading to theory that by controlling rate of cooling, after rail leaves mill, ideal combination of hardness and strength can be obtained.
