Reasons for introduction of electricity to drive of deck auxiliaries; reference is made to good qualities of steam auxiliaries and how difficult some of these qualities are to reproduce electrically; electric windlasses are dealt with and their various forms of control, including Ward Leonard, constant current, and recent modified and greatly improved system known as booster control; various types of electric winches now in general use are compared and general trend of advance indicated.
