International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is engaged in study of facts relating to landing charges; world's scheduled international air services in 1963 paid $130 million in landing charges, 7.4 times as much as in 1951; global costs of international air services increased over same period by factor of 4. 3; costs paid by British European Airways during 10-yr period covering cost of fuel and oil, aircraft maintenance and overhaul, and landing fees, expressed as percentage of total cost show that share taken up by landing fees has increased, from 3 1/2% in 1953/54 to 6 1/2% 10 yr later, to point where they have become equal in significance with costs of fuel and oil, aircraft maintenance and overhaul.
