Research project carried out by U S Federal Aviation Agency in connection with jet crash which occurred during thunderstorm near Elkton, Md Dec 8 1963; phase I of project comprised investigation and evaluation of ignition source -- lightning; phase II was concerned with fuel characteristics and flame suppression; both phases are described and results obtained indicated; that lightning was responsible for crash has not been established, but lightning hazard to aircraft fuel systems does exist where adequate design precautions have not been taken.
