Two models of VJ 101 C aircraft, designated X-1 and X-2, were built by Entwicklungsring-Sued, West Germany; aircraft are essentially identical, difference being installation of afterburning engines and additional fuel capacity in X-2 aircraft; X-1 is used to investigate low-speed portion of flight envelope, including hover and transition flight, while X-2 will be used to investigate high-speed portion; aircraft is powered by six Rolls Royce RB 145 turbojet engines, arranged in three pairs; one pair is installed vertically forward in fuselage behind cockpit, and one pair is mounted in rotatable pods on each wing tip; development and test program.
