Review of recent engine improvements to reduce operating costs and examples of features to insure low vibration level, low metal temperatures of hot end parts; use of advanced design technology and cyclic testing techniques for major rotating and structural parts will improve reliability and reduce maintenance costs; early failure detection and design features facilitating internal inspection and sectional overhaul, will produce further economies as longer life of parts makes it possible to replace conventional overhaul procedure by "overhaul on condition"; possible way to reduce power plant weight is indicated.
