Application of fixed plus variable cost concept to assessment of direct operating costs of proposed supersonic transport; it is shown that unit variable cost is approximately same as it is for subsonic long range jet transports; unit fixed cost, however, is four times as great as it is for subsonic transports; factors which cause increased fixed costs are identified; fixed cost required to stop supersonic craft results in much more rapid rate of increase of per mile operating cost with reduced trip length than is case with subsonic aircraft; this reduces operating flexibility of supersonic aircraft.
