Community noise characteristics of subsonic jet aircraft resulted in stringent acoustical objectives for supersonic transport; achievement of 108 PNdb (perceived noise level) takeoff objective constituted significant portion of total design effort on SST; it is possible to provide airplane that produces less community noise than present jets by use of engines with airflows of three to four times that of existing subsonic jet engines, but with low velocities resulting in low jet noise, and by providing aircraft with outstanding takeoff and climb-out performance.
