Flow field in which inlet operates has effects on choice of inlet location, inlet type, and performance; 40° conical probe was used to map flow field of two SST configuration wind tunnel models, Mach 2.5 and 2.7; wing and fuselage act as effective shields or flow straighteners for inlets; axisymmetric inlets with partial internal compression are shown to be practical in these flow fields; inlet performance variations due to airplane maneuvers are estimated using flow field properties measured.
