Review of decisions which had to be taken by Eastern Air Lines, Inc, in selecting course of corrective action for Pratt and Whitney JT3C-12 engine on Boeing 720 airplane; engine is up-rated version of JT3C-7 engine, boosted to substantially higher level of temperatures; there are two prime measures of performance of engine in commercial service, reliability and cost; chronological summary of respective number of unscheduled engine changes and in-flight shutdowns chargeable to mechanical failures in hot section of engine; corrective action program and its five principal facets; results obtained are given.
