Paper considers gasoline properties which affect fuel economy; available energy in fuel as related to fuel composition and chemical and physical characteristics of fuel as they affect conversion of this energy into work; it shows that energy contents of commercial gasolines fall within narrow range, increasing octane number of gasoline will not necessarily increase gasoline economy, volatility is important to obtaining good mileage, and gasoline must be kept free of contaminants.
