High-speed performance of conventional multicylinder coil ignition system is limited by reduced contact dwell times with increasing speed, and by mechanical limitations of cam operated contact breakers; introduction of semiconductor devices led to development of racing 8-cyl contactless ignition system capable of providing ignition for engine speeds up to 15,000 rpm; system, built by Joseph Lucas (Electrical) Ltd, is described together with transistor assisted contacts system and contactless system for conventional vehicles.
