Noting that Pennsylvania Railroad is making extensive use of all-welded construction for bridges, author says that such bridges not only cost less per pound than riveted structures but that total weight is less; he suggests that misunderstanding regarding fatigue strength and overemphasis of possible failure due to brittle fracture may lie behind hesitant attitude of some bridge engineers toward allwelded design.
