American Car and Foundry design for new box cars is presented; building block concept was evoloved for underframes to assure weight reduction, to produce capacity for supporting fork-lift wheel loads of 12,000 to 60,000 lb, and to add strength in strategic locations dictated by analysis and test data; building blocks, eight in all, are basic structural components of underframe and side-sill and door-post assemblies; typical specification of box cars are listed.
