Kando system of railway electrification has given rise to great deal of experimental work; its advantages are that 50-cycle, single-phase current drawn from industrial supply is used for operating locomotives, equipped with induction motors; experiments are said to have established technical soundness of scheme, and large-scale developments are being undertaken with view to testing its commercial value; contracts for substation and locomotive equipment placed with Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co.; details of locomotives.
