Origin of Maier form; experiments led to belief that in vessel of normal form, particles of water encountering bow pass over surface in passage to stern in path which produced sort of serpentine curve; Maier concluded that if form could be so altered as to produce path that would appear on body plan as more or less straight diagonal, path would be shorter and resistance less; advantages of Maier form.
