Use of elastic Rail Spike by British Railways to absorb rail movements and prolong life of ties and track components; laminated to give flexibility under low stress, spike is made from one piece of silco manganese steel bar; it is driven until head makes contact with rail foot, then further 3/16 in., which flexes head and puts proportionate pressure on rail base.
