Seven American yards were awarded contracts to build five each of these freighters; SS "Old Colony Mariner", constructed by Bethlehem Steel Co, Quincy, Mass, described in particular; main propulsion unit of each "Mariner" ship consists of cross compound turbine which drives propeller through double reduction gearing.
