United States leads all Europe in mileage flown at night; on 2700-mi. span between Atlantic and Pacific seaboards there are 887 individual lighted aids to air navigation; standard 4-in. rotating beacon for airports; radiophones and directional radio beacons constitute block system of air and put pilot in closer touch with operating department than are engineers on railroad trains; one pilot can talk to another 175 mi. away or to ground station 200 mi. distant.
