No. 313: Investigation in N.A.C.A. 20-ft. propeller research tunnel, of Whirlwind J-5 engine with several forms and degrees of cowling mounted on nose of cabin fuselage; cooling, drag, and flight tests made; effect of cowling on propulsive efficiency determined with metal propeller; cowling entirely covering engine reduces drag 2.6 times and seems entirely practical as regards both cooling and maintenance; with cabin fuselages substantial increase in high speed was obtained. No. 314: Results of second portion of investigation of Whirlwind engine cowling in 20-ft. propeller-research tunnel; tests with individual fairings behind cylinders, individual hoods over cylinders, and new N.A.C.A. complete cowling; reduction in drag with complete cowling over that with conventional cowling is greater with smaller bodies than with cabin fuselage; gain in case of completely cowled nacelle is over twice that with cabin fuselage; results of flight tests.
