Substations designed to meet demands of heavy railway terminal service are described; d.c. energy is furnished at 1500 volts from 7 substations located in Chicago district, owned and operated by power companies; in addition to 1500-volt supply for traction purposes, alternating current at 4000/2300 volts is provided for railway company's light, power and signal systems; 80 per cent of conversion capacity is in synchronous converters and remainder in mercury rectifiers; reasons for selecting latter units are given.
