London and North Eastern placed in service two tenders provided with side corridors for service behind locomotives that haul Flying Scotsman and Royal Lancer; locomotives are of 3-cylinder 4-6-2 type; reasons for this design is to permit relief of engine crew as train passes Tollerton, which is half-way point between King's Cross and Edinburg; circular windows are provided at each end of corridor for lighting interior; coal capacity of 8 tons.
