Cylinders, bedplates and column patterns for marine engines require much timber in their construction, and labor charges are fairly high; in many large shipbuilding yards there are two pattern shops; one of these does all work in connection with propelling machinery, while other, called yard pattern shop, is responsible for patterns used in construction of hull, deck fittings and hawser pipes.
