It is shown that timing and programming of track maintenance work are influenced by interplay of factors which can be classified as safety of line, occupation time available, and cost; shoulder ramming tests on German Federal Railways were carried out with both on-track and offtrack equipment including Matisa-Windhoff BV and other ramming and compacting machines; rectilinear track section laid on homogenous formation, uniformly tamped and marked out into 22 lengths, was used for controlled trials; section carried daily traffic of 23,000 tons.
