Factors influencing optimal interstation spacings for line-haul passenger transportation on commuter railroads are analyzed with respect to objective of minimum total passenger travel time; study concentrates on case in which population of area commutes to one central point; model incorporates passenger distribution along line, access speed, dynamic characteristics of train, standing time of train in stations, and intermodal transfer time at stations; algorithms for numerical and graphical solutions for several different sets of parameters are presented and demonstrated by examples.
