Electric locomotive and 50-cycle traction, diesel electric, steam turbine, and gas turbine locomotives, considered; it is concluded that reciprocating steam locomotive has survived for so long because it is cheap, sturdy, and simple; but proven success of alternative forms of traction should give cause for serious thought as to whether ancient tradition of steam continues to be valid.
