Torsional fatigue testing machine described; tests on shafts with welded on flanges, solid forged shafts, and on meehanite cast iron shafts; results indicate overall reduction in fatigue strength in large shafts due to stress concentration set up by geometrical form of stressed parts, to lack of homogeneity of material, and to any size effect, if present.
