Early history; river now contains 46 locks and dams which are shown on map; these have total lift of 426.4 ft and form series of pools or lakes during periods of low river flow; major portion of present commerce on river is handled in barge tows consisting of towboat and one or more barges; minimum depth over worst shoals is 9 ft and every mile is marked with shore aids and buoys to help navigator; wartime traffic; navigation aids; design of vessels.
