First underpass over which planes taxi was opened at New York International Airport, operated by Port of New York Authority; it is built to withstand pressure from below sea level and to support two bridges capable of handling 300,000-lb planes; described as huge "concrete boat," underpass contains 45,000 cu ft of concrete and 3000 tons of reinforced steel; electric pumps automatically lift rain water to higher level where it runs off into drainage system; six lanes of traffic at widest point.
