New findings resulting from investigations initiated in connection with cracking of merchant ships during World War II are critically reviewed along with certain widely accepted viewpoints; available data compared to test validity of evidence bearing on incidence of cracks; no evidence indicates that either riveted or welded structure is more susceptible, to inception of cracks.
