Study to examine vehicle operating characteristics at outer merging ramp of grade-separated interchanges and factors relating to merging capacity; data from two interchanges on Highway 401 in Toronto, Ontario area were examined and analyzed; analysis of critical lag related to trailing through vehicle produced linear relationship between critical lag and speed difference between through vehicle and merging vehicle; theory of merging is proposed; merging capacity curves are plotted to show effect of entry speed, merging speed, through speed, acceleration lane length and driving lane volume.
