Rangers VII and VIII showed that moon is extensively cratered to 1-m scale; observed frequency distribution of craters is consistent with impact theory; Ranger IX, however, showed many small craters that are probably of internal origin; Surveyor spacecraft revealed numerous angular blocks of coherent material surrounding large craters; Lunar Orbiter provided extensive photography of potential Apollo landing sites, entire front-face, and most of far side; summary of results obtained and some photographs.
