Methods employed of rating vehicle brakes, in particular, snub method, described in SAE Recommended Practice J880 and problems posed by latter; description of traveling dynamometer method or drag method of determining brake rating horsepower which is constant speed, constant torque test similar to that of Prony brake test; unit can be operated on available roads; comparison of performance requirements of two test procedures shows that methods differ during 12 min rating test period; remaining test procedures and requirements, such as preparation, burnish, cold stop, hot stop, stability, and structural integrity, remain same; three traveling dynamometers now in use are described and results of tests presented.
