High-speed photography plays increasingly important role in testing materials exposed to high impact stresses, vibration, cavitation, distortion, etc; technique is successfully applied to study high rates of strain experienced by airplane tire cords during landing, by seat belts and safety lines when accidents occur, by parachutes in descent and by threads and yarns processed in textile mills, cavitation of ship propellers, and wheels of moving train; light sources are discussed; ballistic tests are described.
