Mechanical properties and impregnability of Homalium spp. wood were studied; its natural durability and performance as tie material were examined; results showed that Homalium spp. is one of strongest woods used as railroad ties on Japanese National Railways, except bending impact strength; natural antidecay durability of wood is low, so ties should be treated with creosote oil; sap- and heartwood of Homalium spp. can be easily impregnated by Bethell process; comparison of performance with other wooden ties.
