Study of mechanization of allocation of empty cars carried out by Swiss Federal Railways to introduce freight traffic centralized management; problem to be solved, choices made, and working hypotheses assumed, are explained; precisions on algorithm used are given; mathematical model programmed and results obtained by first tests; computer worked out optimization of car allocation on basis of supply and demand recorded during one day by 64 main stations of one of 5 allocation districts.
