North American cities are turning to rapid transit to complement but not replace freeways; rapid transit requires less land, can handle rush-hour traffic more efficiently, and can be faster and cheaper; to be successful rapid transit system must offer superior speed and must draw from wider "people shed" by employing buses as feeders and by providing large parking lots; Toronto and Montreal have introduced much quieter trains; San Francisco will introduce car almost luxurious in its appointments with automation of train operation and fare collection -- to boost efficiency and cut costs.
