Models of three vessels were towed (or propelled by their own screws) at various speeds and drafts in varying depths of water; information from actual ships was obtained by making wave measurements on St. Lawrence River; results of experiments are described in graphical form; it is possible to predict with reasonable accuracy wave-making capacity of various vessels as functions of their physical characteristics and of channels they are traveling in; speed is major contributor to wave heights generated, but in narrow and shallow channels drawdown may prove more deleterious to river banks than wave action.
