During 1961, 62% of deaths due to accidents on divided state highways in New York were result of vehicles crossing median; research involving 48 full-scale test collisions by New York State Department of Public Works has led to improved guardrail designs and to entirely new box-section guardrail and median barrier; key in design is posts; it was found that posts should be comparatively weak in direction of vehicular travel, but strong laterally; weak longitudinally, posts bend over at ground level and thus do not impart dangerously high deceleration rates to crashing vehicle and passengers; strong laterally, posts, together with rail, cushion crashing vehicle and prevent it from penetrating barrier; for use on narrow medians, new boxbeam barrier with close-set posts has proven effective.
