Theoretical, applied research, and development work in combustion stability has been successful in providing techniques that can be used to improve stability characteristics of rocket engines; stability histories of Titan II, Titan III, Apollo, Transtage, and Gemini Stability Improvement Program are reviewed, along with research programs, to illustrate coupling between technology programs and engine system problems in development of state of art; experimental data demonstrate effect of injector element size, injection distribution, baffle configuration, and chamber wall characteristics on high-frequency modes of combustion instability; combustion anomalies such as spontaneous pops or detonations are discussed.
