Parameters which have influence upon weight of thin wall pressure vessels under specified design conditions are examined; generalized treatment is presented of governing primary weight equation that relates structural configuration efficiency, material efficiency, and prescribed design conditions; configuration efficiencies of various shapes for different failure criteria are summarized and compared; structural strength/weight ratios attained with current monolithic metallics and filamentary composites are evaluated; design synthesis chart summarizes major results of investigation.
