Rocket investigations of short-lived, unpredictable geophysical disturbances involve many practical difficulties; it is necessary to have rockets, payloads, and ground stations all ready and checked out, and to wait for suitable launching conditions; some phenomenological considerations are reviewed, particularly with auroral zone in mind; range procedures for preparation and launching which have been found satisfactory in practice are described.
