Detonability of gaseous mixtures as propellant combination was investigated for initial pressures ranging from 760 to 0.1 mm Hg and initial temperatures of -180, -50, +70. and +200 F; both strong igniters, comprised of 70 grains of PETN, and weak sources such as spark discharge, were used; tests with former, which produced strong initiating shock wave, indicated that detonation cannot be supported below initial pressure of 10 mm Hg; in general, measured steady wave velocities were lower and pressures higher than corresponding theoretical Champman-Jouguet values; weak igniter tests provided information on development of detonation.
